Boko Haram Overruns Borno Military Base, Kills Soldiers, Vigilantes

Boko Haram terrorists attacked a Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base in Mandaragirau, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, in the early hours of Friday, killing five soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).

The assault occurred around 3am under heavy rainfall and poor visibility, according to a statement by Lt. Col. Haruna Sani, Acting Media Information Officer of the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI.

The terrorists attempted to breach sections of the base but were met with a fierce counter-offensive by troops, who inflicted casualties on the attackers and eventually repelled them. The military maintained that troops remain in full control of the facility.

“Determined troops responded with a fierce counter-offensive, decisively frustrating further incursions,” Sani said.

He confirmed that five soldiers and three CJTF members paid the supreme price during the intense firefight, while some equipment was affected. Wounded personnel were airlifted and are receiving treatment.

Local sources and the President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, Samaila Kaigama, confirmed the attack, with some accounts suggesting it targeted more than one location and lasted nearly an hour.

Eyewitness and military sources described scenes of close-quarter combat, with reports of terrorists pursuing fleeing soldiers amid the downpour.

A viral video circulating after the incident reportedly showed bodies within the base, though casualty figures remain disputed, with some military sources claiming higher losses than the official count.

The military described the terrorists’ actions as a sign of desperation amid sustained operational pressure.

Exploitation and clearance operations are ongoing to consolidate the area, with additional troops and combat enablers being deployed across the North-East theatre.

Kaigama called on the government to strengthen community intelligence networks and grassroots engagement to prevent future attacks.
