Six schoolchildren, their driver and two other adults abducted on the Akwando-Kachia Road, Kaduna State have been freed after 36 days in captivity.
The victims were kidnapped on April 26, 2026, when bandits attacked a vehicle transporting pupils from Akwando village to Kachia. Nine passengers were taken and a young girl was reportedly killed during the assault.
Manasseh Samuel, spokesman of Kuturmi Unity Development Association, confirmed the release. “The victims returned home on Sunday morning after trekking for about six hours through the bush,” he said.
Former media aide to ex-Governor Patrick Yakowa, Reuben Buhari, also announced the release on Facebook. He noted the children lost nearly an entire academic term but thanked God for their survival.
“Special gratitude to everyone for their prayers and contributions in different ways that led to their freedom,” Buhari wrote.
He urged continued prayers for other captives still held by bandits, including those from Awon village, in captivity for 42 days, and Ariko village, held for 57 days.
