Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has asked President Bola Tinubu to urgently approve 1,000 forest guards for Borno State to tackle banditry and terrorism.
In a Monday statement, Falana said Borno should get the same treatment Oyo State received after the recent abduction of pupils and teachers. Tinubu approved forest guards for Oyo and sent a federal delegation there.
“With not less than 415 abducted school children and other citizens still in illegal custody of bandits and terrorists in Borno forests, the President should dispatch a high-powered federal delegation to the state,” he stated.
Falana stressed the guards must be “well trained and fully equipped to confront bandits and terrorists armed with AK-47 and other dangerous weapons.”
He also called on Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi to drop charges against seven leaders of the Nigeria Forest Security Service.
“Since the Federal Government has now embraced the forest guard initiative, the AGF should discontinue the criminal case pending at the Federal High Court,” he said.
According to Falana, the move would strengthen security in the North-East and restore public trust.
