Bandits Not Alone, Getting Support From Those in Power’ — Ex-NYSC DG

A former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga (rtd), has claimed that bandits terrorising communities may be receiving support from individuals in positions of power.

Tsiga made the allegation during a press conference in Kaduna while speaking about the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who was killed in bandits’ captivity in Katsina State.

The retired general, who himself was kidnapped earlier this year, recounted his experience in captivity, describing a disturbing network of informants and suppliers allegedly linked to influential figures.

“These people may be having the backing of those in power,” Tsiga said. “One night, around 2 a.m., someone called offering to sell 10 cartons of ammunition.

"When I asked jokingly to be included, the bandit replied, ‘You are a retired general. You don’t have office. We are talking to people who are in office now.’”

His remarks have raised fresh concerns about the possibility of collusion between criminal groups and individuals with access to resources and authority.

The revelation comes amid growing insecurity across northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on communities continue to escalate despite government efforts to restore peace.
