Tinubu’s N17bn Solar Project Shows He’s Abandoned Power Promise - Dino Melaye

Former senator Dino Melaye has accused President Bola Tinubu of abandoning his pledge to improve Nigeria’s electricity supply, pointing to the installation of a ₦17 billion solar power system at the presidential villa as evidence.

In a video shared on his Facebook page on Saturday, Melaye described the move as insensitive, arguing that it highlights the president’s disregard for ordinary Nigerians struggling with poor electricity access.

“He decided that Nigerians should continue in darkness and bought a solar system in the presidential villa at the whopping cost of ₦17 billion,” Melaye said.

“When the president says he is off the national grid, that is to tell you he has given up on power. Leadership is by example. How can you have solar power in the villa while the poor farmer in Ogbomoso sleeps with candles?”

Melaye criticized Tinubu for prioritizing comfort at Aso Rock over nationwide power reforms, calling him “the most insensitive character I have seen.”

His remarks add to ongoing debates about Nigeria’s energy crisis, where millions of citizens continue to face unreliable electricity despite repeated government promises of reform.
