Oshiomhole: Tinubu Has Political Will “In Abundance” to Tackle Insecurity

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu lacks the political will to address Nigeria’s security challenges, insisting that the administration has shown commitment through funding, leadership, and decisive actions.

Speaking in Abuja at the launch of a book authored by Olusola Odumosu, Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) FCT Command, Oshiomhole argued that insecurity persists not because of presidential inaction but due to gaps in execution at lower levels.

“The Commander-in-Chief gives the order: go and ensure that the country is safe, as President Bola Tinubu has done repeatedly. He has provided more money, even supplementary budgets. What more political will do you need?” Oshiomhole said.

He pointed to Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency and the replacement of former service chiefs as evidence of resolve, stressing that security should transcend partisan divides.

However, Oshiomhole raised concerns about whether directives from the top are effectively implemented on the ground, citing issues of morale, equipment, and allowances among lower ranks.

He also suggested reviewing the NSCDC’s name, arguing that the “civil” designation is inconsistent with its mandate to confront armed criminals.

Odumosu, the book’s author, echoed the need for stronger inter-agency cooperation, warning that unhealthy rivalry among security agencies undermines national responses.

He called for a united front against banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, noting that no single agency can tackle Nigeria’s complex security challenges alone.

The remarks come amid ongoing debates about the government’s ability to decisively confront insecurity, with critics attributing persistent violence to weak political will, a claim Oshiomhole firmly rejected.
