Bandits’ Attacks: Federal Government Raises N500bn Emergency Security Fund

The Federal Government has deducted approximately N500 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue for May 2026 to establish a national security emergency intervention fund amid escalating banditry and other security threats across the country.

The deduction was made before the monthly revenue sharing among the federal, state, and local governments, according to multiple sources familiar with the FAAC proceedings.

One source confirmed: “FAAC deducted N500bn for national security emergency fund this month.” Another official noted that the amount accounted for a significant portion of the difference between total revenue generated and the final distributable funds.

An official FAAC document reviewed by The PUNCH showed related major deductions, including N250 billion for a Military Intervention Fund and N252 billion for an Infrastructure Development Fund, alongside other adjustments.

The FAAC distributed N2.30 trillion in total for May 2026, an increase from the previous month, with the Federal Government receiving N818.68 billion, states N759.14 billion, and local governments N534.28 billion.

The move comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with persistent security challenges, including banditry in the North-West, insurgency in the North-East, farmer-herder clashes, and other violent crimes.

Despite annual budgetary allocations for defence, attacks and kidnappings remain a major concern.

Economists have welcomed the initiative, stressing the need for greater investment in troops, equipment, surveillance, and personnel recruitment, while calling for transparency and accountability in the utilisation of the funds.

The development aligns with the Tinubu administration’s commitment to prioritising national security as a foundation for economic growth and stability.
