Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has accused African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of lacking compassion for victims of terrorism in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Lawal cited the 2022 killing of Deborah Samuel, a Christian student in Sokoto State accused of blasphemy.
He recalled that Atiku initially condemned the incident but later withdrew the statement, claiming it was issued without his approval.
“Atiku Abubakar has no sympathy for the victims of terrorism. When Deborah Samuel was brutally murdered in Sokoto, Atiku issued a press release condemning the action. In the long run, the following day, he withdrew it and apologized,” Lawal said.
He further criticized Atiku for failing to openly condemn violent threats made by extremist clerics or attacks by bandits and herdsmen. “I’ve never heard him condemn when Imams go on television and threaten that if you say anything against Prophet Muhammad, we’ll go after you and kill you,” Lawal added.
Lawal argued that Atiku’s silence on such issues reflects indifference to the plight of victims, contrasting it with what he believes should be strong leadership in confronting terrorism and insecurity.
