A prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Umar Sani, has explained that former President Goodluck Jonathan is deliberately taking his time before publicly accepting or rejecting the party’s presidential nomination form for the 2027 general elections.
Sani made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television. He dismissed any notion of reluctance on Jonathan’s part, noting that the former president had already served in the office and is approaching the decision with caution.
According to Sani, Jonathan is interested in returning to the presidency but is focused on clearing certain obstacles first. A key issue is the ongoing eligibility case against him.
“There is an eligibility case against Jonathan. Even though the court has dismissed the case, the people are adamant and they have gone ahead to appeal the judgment,” Sani said.
He added: “One thing must give way for another to thrive. Jonathan wants to become president. There are encumbrances that need to be cleared before he will express himself.”
Sani stressed that Jonathan is determined but strategic. “I won’t think there is any reluctance on his part. He is very determined to become president of Nigeria, but he is being very careful about the court case,” he noted.
As far as Sani and his group are concerned, Jonathan remains their preferred candidate. “We have put out his name, though he has not come out publicly to either accept or reject. I think he’s been very strategic. He’s taking his time,” the PDP stalwart declared.
This development comes amid ongoing discussions and factional activities within the PDP regarding the 2027 presidential race. Jonathan himself has not made any public statement on the matter.
