Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has strongly criticised a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for adopting former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
In a post on his verified X handle on Monday, Sani described the move as belated and self-serving.
Reacting to the faction’s decision, Sani said those now pushing Jonathan’s candidacy failed to support him when the PDP was stronger and better positioned to challenge for power.
“If they actually wanted Jonathan, they should have fielded him in 2023 when the party was relatively alive and in good shape. They just now want him to help them carry the coffin,” he said.
Sani argued that the current effort appears less about giving Jonathan a genuine chance to return to power and more about using his stature to revive a weakened and divided platform.
The comments come days after the PDP faction led by Kabiru Turaki ratified Jonathan as its presidential candidate at a special convention in Abuja.
Jonathan was not physically present at the event, with his certificate of return received on his behalf. The development highlights the deepening crisis and factionalisation within the PDP as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify.
