Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government over its slow response to the renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the government’s handling of the crisis as embarrassing and lethargic, noting that smaller African countries acted faster to protect their citizens.
He contrasted Nigeria’s response with that of Ghana, which quickly approved the evacuation of over 300 of its citizens, while President Bola Tinubu’s administration was seen as reacting only after external pressure.
“It is deeply troubling that Nigeria, a country that prides itself as the leader of the Black world and the giant of Africa, once again found itself reacting instead of leading in a moment of continental crisis,” Atiku said.
The ADC chieftain acknowledged that the government has now spoken about repatriation efforts but questioned the delay, arguing it does not reflect the urgency expected from a responsible administration.
He recalled the recurring nature of xenophobic violence against Nigerians in South Africa, involving intimidation, harassment, looting, and destruction of businesses, and urged the FG to take stronger measures.
Atiku called on the government to issue a stronger travel advisory, commence evacuation plans for willing Nigerians, intensify diplomatic engagement with South Africa, and work with the African Union to address the root causes of xenophobia on the continent.
He emphasised that the primary duty of any government is the protection of its citizens, wherever they may be.
