Videos, Statements of Me Supporting Bandits Doctored – Gumi

Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi, has strongly denied allegations linking him to banditry, claiming that videos and statements attributed to him supporting bandits have been doctored and manipulated.

In a press statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, Gumi said he has observed deliberate misrepresentation of his media interviews on insecurity and banditry by “ethnic-interest groups, individuals driven by prejudice, and sectional internet content creators.”

The cleric stated unequivocally that he has never supported or justified banditry in any form.

“I hereby state unequivocally that any video clip, written statement, or message attributed to me, whether directly or by innuendo, suggesting support for, justification of, protection of, or advocacy for banditry in Nigeria or anywhere else does not emanate from me,” he said.

Gumi urged the general public, the media, and the Nigerian state to disregard such fake, manipulated, and doctored materials currently in circulation.

The statement comes amid recurring controversies surrounding the controversial cleric, who has in the past been accused of sympathising with bandits through his calls for dialogue and negotiation as a solution to banditry and kidnapping in northern Nigeria.
