‘Politicians Won’t Stop Stealing if Nigerians Don’t Stone Us’ – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has made a strong call for Nigerians to take decisive action against corrupt politicians, warning that leaders will continue stealing public funds unless citizens actively hold them accountable.

Amaechi made the remark on Friday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time. He referenced a statement he made years ago as Rivers State Governor at an event organised by Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka at Freedom House.

“As a governor of Rivers State at Freedom House in a ceremony organized by Prof Wole Soyinka, I told Nigerians that we the politicians will not stop stealing if Nigerians don’t stone us,” Amaechi said.

The former governor lamented that many politicians are impoverishing Nigerians through corruption and bad governance.

While acknowledging that some governors have made positive contributions, he expressed pain over the gradual decline of governance in the country.

“The politicians are impoverishing Nigerians. I’m a different politician and there are others as well. A lot of governors have made positive contributions. But governance is slowly dying and it’s quite painful,” he added.

Amaechi urged Nigerians to “wake up and do the needful,” implying stronger public pressure and resistance against corrupt leadership.

The comments come as Amaechi continues to position himself as a critic of the current administration while eyeing a potential run for the presidency in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
