President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, aged 81, was officially sworn in on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, for a record seventh five-year term as President of Uganda, extending his rule that began in 1986.
The inauguration ceremony took place at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in the capital, Kampala.
It featured a grand military parade, a major drone show displaying Museveni's image over Lake Victoria, and the attendance of numerous regional leaders and foreign dignitaries, including South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and representatives from the United States.
Museveni secured a landslide victory in the January 15, 2026, presidential election with approximately 71.65% of the vote, defeating his main rival, opposition leader and musician Bobi Wine.
The results have drawn international criticism and allegations of electoral irregularities, opposition crackdowns, and fraud.
During the swearing-in, administered by Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija, Museveni took the oaths of allegiance and office. He received the instruments of power, marking the start of his term running until 2031.
In his address and agenda for the new term, he emphasized economic growth to achieve middle-income status, infrastructure development, oil production preparations, and strengthened regional diplomacy.
Museveni, one of Africa's longest-serving leaders, has governed Uganda for over four decades. Supporters credit him with bringing stability and development to the country, while critics continue to raise concerns about democratic backsliding, the removal of term limits in 2005, and human rights issues.
The event underscores the continuity of leadership in Uganda amid ongoing debates about political succession and governance in the region.
