Atiku Faults Tinubu’s Security Strategy as Ex-Lawmaker Dies in Bandit Captivity

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s security strategy after the death of former House of Representatives member Abba Adamu in bandit captivity.

Adamu was abducted along the Abuja-Kaduna highway on May 3, 2026, and died nine days later despite family efforts to secure his release.

In a statement issued on Tuesday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the incident as a stark sign of deepening insecurity nationwide.

He called the ex-lawmaker’s death both a personal tragedy and a serious failure by the government to fulfil its duty to protect lives and property.

“Adamu’s death is yet another grim reminder of the worsening collapse of security under the Tinubu administration,” Atiku said.

“Nigeria is under siege, and this administration appears either overwhelmed, indifferent, or dangerously incompetent in the face of this national emergency.”

He questioned what hope ordinary citizens have when even a former National Assembly member could be kidnapped on a major highway and die in captivity.

Atiku highlighted the pattern of abductions from highways, farms, communities, and homes, accusing the government of offering only empty assurances instead of effective action.

The ADC chieftain condemned the persistent attacks along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor despite heavy security spending and repeated promises of improvement.

“A government that cannot secure its highways cannot claim to govern,” he stated.Atiku demanded clear answers on the administration’s security strategy, greater urgency, and accountability.

He urged the government to treat the crisis as a national emergency rather than issuing routine condolences.

He extended condolences to Adamu’s family, the people of Jigawa State, and all Nigerians affected by insecurity.
