Turkey-Nigeria Defence Pact Will Boost Fight Against Terrorism – Joshua Ocheja

Military historian, Joshua Ocheja, has expressed confidence that the recent defence cooperation agreement between Nigeria and Turkey will significantly strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism and insecurity.

Ocheja described the bilateral security pact as a timely and strategic move that will enhance intelligence sharing, military training, and technical support for Nigerian forces.

“Nigeria stands to benefit greatly from this partnership,” he said. “Turkey has demonstrated considerable expertise in counter-terrorism operations and defence technology, and this agreement provides a solid framework for collaboration that can help tackle the persistent threat of terrorism in Africa’s most populous nation.”

The defence agreement was one of nine Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed in January during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Turkey.

The pacts aim to deepen bilateral ties in areas including trade, education, culture, and security.

The defence cooperation deal is expected to open avenues for procurement of military equipment, joint exercises, and capacity building for Nigeria’s armed forces as the country intensifies efforts to end insurgency in the Northeast, banditry in the Northwest, and other security challenges across the country.

Analysts believe the partnership reflects Nigeria’s evolving foreign policy under the Tinubu administration, which seeks diversified international alliances to address domestic security and economic needs.

Ocheja urged relevant authorities to ensure effective implementation of the agreement so that its benefits translate into tangible improvements in Nigeria’s security architecture.
