The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has screened 158 aspirants for the 24 seats in the Kwara State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The screening exercise, conducted on Monday, saw aspirants from all 16 local government areas of the state participate as the party ramps up preparations for the polls.
Party leaders described the high number of aspirants as a sign of the APC’s growing popularity and strong internal democracy in Kwara.
Chairman of the Screening Committee, Prof. Success Musa, said the large turnout reflected confidence in the party’s leadership under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and the state APC Chairman.
“That is democracy. That is what APC represents,” Prof. Musa stated. He emphasised that the rigorous screening process was designed to produce qualified candidates and avoid costly legal pitfalls, citing the recent Supreme Court judgment in Bayelsa State where the APC lost a governorship mandate over candidate qualification issues.
He urged aspirants to channel any grievances through the party’s appeal committee rather than engaging in actions that could undermine unity, stressing the need for maturity and cooperation.
Kwara APC Chairman, Sunday Fagbemi, assured participants that the exercise would be fair, transparent, and in line with constitutional and party requirements.
He noted that the process aims to prevent documentation errors that could jeopardise the party’s chances in the elections.Several aspirants commended the conduct of the screening.
AbdulRasheed Akogun, contesting for the Share/Oke Ode constituency ticket, described the process as seamless, free, fair, and credible.
He attributed the massive interest in APC tickets to Governor AbdulRazaq’s good leadership and declared the opposition “dead” in the state.
House of Assembly Leader, Magaji Oba Abdulkadir, also praised the orderly nature of the exercise.
Female aspirant Fatimah Jiyah highlighted that about 30% of the aspirants are women, crediting the governor’s gender inclusion policies.
The APC has consistently promised credible primaries as it positions itself to maintain dominance in Kwara State ahead of 2027.
