The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has issued a stern warning to party aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections: any form of misconduct during the primaries will attract severe sanctions, including immediate suspension.
In a statement released on Monday through his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, Yilwatda addressed aspirants who had undergone recent screening exercises.
He emphasised the party’s commitment to conducting transparent, peaceful, credible, and democratic primaries that would strengthen internal democracy.
With the APC primaries scheduled to begin on May 15 for the House of Representatives, followed by the Senate (May 18), state Houses of Assembly (May 20), governorship (May 21), and the presidential primary (May 23), concerns have arisen over reports of heated exchanges among some aspirants that could lead to a tense process.
The APC chairman made it clear that the party leadership would not tolerate actions such as instigating violence, sponsoring unrest, engaging in anti-party activities, or undermining the integrity of the primaries.
“In every democratic contest, only one person will eventually emerge victorious. What is important is the spirit with which the process is approached,” he said.
“I urge all aspirants to display maturity, patriotism, and good sportsmanship by embracing the outcome of the primaries in the overall interest of the party and our democracy.”
Yilwatda further urged aspirants to act as ambassadors of the party, ensuring their conduct reflects APC values both during and after the primaries.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for his dedication to strengthening democratic institutions and building a more united party aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He advised all stakeholders to avoid divisive actions or statements that could overheat the polity, stressing that the current focus should be on sustaining the administration’s bold reforms for long-term economic stability and national prosperity.
The warning comes as a separate pro-Tinubu group, “Relax, Tinubu is Fixing Nigeria,” announced plans to campaign for the President’s re-election by highlighting what it described as 301 achievements of the administration.
