President Bola Tinubu has expressed delight that Nigerian states are no longer struggling to pay workers’ salaries, attributing the improvement to the economic reforms implemented by his administration.
The President made the remark on Friday while receiving members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who paid him a Sallah homage at his residence in Lagos.
Tinubu noted that prior to his administration, as many as 27 governors had to borrow from the federal government or seek interventions just to meet salary obligations. He said that situation has now changed significantly.
“I am glad that out of the 27 governors borrowing from the federal government and asking for interventions, we are no longer struggling to pay salaries. No more,” he stated.
The President described Nigeria’s economy as having recovered from the brink of bankruptcy, highlighting improvements in agriculture, infrastructure development, and macroeconomic indices.
He commended the governors for encouraging citizens to endure the pains of the reforms.
Reflecting on his journey to power, Tinubu recounted the political and legal challenges he faced, saying he “took the bullets” while others stood by the party. He expressed gratitude to the governors for their support and loyalty.
Tinubu also pointed to opportunities in infrastructure projects, particularly along the Sokoto-Badagry corridor, urging governors to leverage available land for irrigation, farming, and electricity generation to achieve food sufficiency.
The comments come as the Tinubu administration marks three years in office amid mixed public assessments of its economic policies.
