Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has firmly denied reports that she dropped out of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial race under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a detailed post on her verified X account, Yesufu clarified that she remained in the race until the end and had no intention of litigating a process that was not properly conducted. She stressed that the party decided against holding primaries for the FCT senatorial seat.
“As the dust settles on the NDC Primaries, I want to set the record straight: I did not quit, I did not drop out of the race,” she wrote.
Yesufu explained that she entered politics with a strong conviction to drive meaningful change, noting that complaining from the sidelines is insufficient. “I did not leave advocacy to go into politics. I took advocacy into politics,” she added.
She expressed pride in her campaign, highlighting its strong grassroots foundation and credibility.
Yesufu also acknowledged the challenges of the political system, which often resists values-based candidates, but affirmed her commitment to upholding her principles without compromise.
Yesufu had joined the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and declared her interest in the FCT senatorial seat earlier in May 2026.
While the party proceeded with primaries for the House of Representatives in the FCT, the senatorial position did not feature a primary election.
Her statement comes after several reports on Friday suggested she had withdrawn from the race following the party’s decision. Yesufu urged focus on the broader goal and pledged to continue her political journey with integrity.
