Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday represented President Bola Tinubu at the public presentation of “My Life of Duty and Allegiance”, the autobiography of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
The high-profile event, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, drew several prominent Nigerians including former President Goodluck Jonathan, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammed Abubakar III, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, and former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Other notable attendees were Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; Defence Minister Christopher Musa; Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftawang; former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai; and several other retired generals and elder statesmen.
Speaking at the event, former Defence Minister Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, who was the chief presenter of the book, lauded Gowon for his exceptional leadership during one of Nigeria’s most turbulent periods.
Danjuma, who was represented by former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Martin Luther Agwai, highlighted Gowon’s famous post-civil war slogan “no victor, no vanquished” and his policies of reconciliation, reconstruction, and rehabilitation.
“He will forever be remembered as a leader whose love for his country and fellow citizens was unwavering, even in the most trying of times,” Danjuma said.
The autobiography launch provided a rare gathering of Nigeria’s past and present leaders, underscoring Gowon’s enduring legacy as a key figure in the country’s history.
