Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi should be arrested without delay for his alleged inflammatory remarks on Nigeria’s security challenges, activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has said.
Adeyanju made the call on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, following the circulation of a video in which Gumi is heard defending Fulani herdsmen amid the country’s ongoing banditry and insecurity crisis.
In the viral clip, Gumi reportedly stated that Fulani herdsmen “are going nowhere,” adding, “they are part of us and we are part of them. We must live with them.”
The activist, known for his outspoken views on governance and security, took to his Facebook page to condemn Gumi’s comments. He argued that sympathizers of terrorists should be treated as terrorists themselves and that such individuals can only thrive in a failed state.
“People like Gumi can only survive in a country without a government. Terrorists sympathizers are terrorists,” Adeyanju wrote. “His words and actions promote terrorism in Nigeria. I call on the government to arrest him to serve as a deterrent to others.”
The demand comes against the backdrop of persistent banditry, kidnappings, and other security threats in parts of northern Nigeria, where Gumi has previously faced criticism for his comments on herdsmen and insurgents.
No official response from the Nigerian government or Gumi has been reported as of the time of this publication.
