Nigerian forces, in collaboration with the United States Africa Command, have delivered a major blow to ISIS terrorists in the North-East, eliminating 175 fighters in ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced the success on Tuesday, stating that the joint strikes, which began a few days ago, have significantly degraded the operational capacity of ISIS in the region.
Among those neutralised was a high-profile ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as the group’s director of global operations. His elimination is expected to severely disrupt ISIS command structure, operational coordination, and external attack networks.
Other senior terrorist figures killed include:
Abd-al Wahhab, an ISWAP senior leader responsible for coordinating attacks and distributing propaganda.
Abu Musa al-Mangawi, a senior ISWAP member.
Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir, ISWAP senior media production team manager and close confidant to al-Minuki.
The operations also involved airstrikes that destroyed several terrorist checkpoints, weapons caches, and logistical networks.
The DHQ described the joint Nigeria-US efforts as highly effective and said assessments as of May 19 confirmed the elimination of the 175 terrorists.
This latest success comes amid renewed counter-insurgency efforts against ISWAP and other terrorist groups that have plagued the North-East for over a decade.
