Protest Erupts at Anambra Govt House as APGA Supporters Reject Primaries Outcome

Thousands of protesters from Oyi Local Government Area stormed the Anambra State Government House (Light House) on Friday, May 29, 2026, demanding Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s intervention in the disputed All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) primary for the Oyi State Constituency.

The demonstrators, carrying placards, accused party officials of rigging the election held last Saturday.

They claim popular candidate and current lawmaker, Hon. Innocent Ojike (also known as Ojicam), won the primary but was shockingly replaced by Mr. Kosisochukwu Ibemesi on the final list of candidates for next year’s Anambra State House of Assembly election.

Leading the peaceful protest, APGA State Auditor Uchenna Oraegbunam expressed disappointment, stating: “We had a very peaceful primary, and Ojicam was declared the winner on the spot because of his popularity. We were all surprised when the party released a different name. This is embarrassing, and we want whoever claims Ibemesi won to come forward and prove it.”

The protesters marched from the Anambra State House of Assembly through Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square to the Government House, chanting and displaying placards such as “Bring back our popular candidate, Ojicam,” “Mr. Governor, do not let this happen in Oyi,” and “Ojicam won the election.”

This protest is part of growing discontent following APGA’s statewide primaries, with several aspirants and groups rejecting the results over alleged manipulation, while successful candidates have hailed the process as transparent.

Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Okechi Vincent Egbuna, addressed the crowd and assured them that Governor Soludo would look into their grievances.

He urged the protesters to submit a formal letter detailing their demands to the governor, party leadership, and the appeal panel, promising that the matter would be addressed fairly.

The situation remains tense as APGA prepares for the 2027 elections, with calls for the party to ensure internal democracy and fairness.
