Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi on Wednesday held high-level meetings with key figures in British politics and the business community aimed at strengthening economic cooperation with Nigeria.
A highlight of the engagements was Obi’s meeting with Lord Jonathan Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC).
The discussions focused on prospective trade opportunities, economic advancement, and strategies to promote small businesses across Nigeria.
In a statement following the meetings, Obi emphasised the critical role of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in driving sustainable economic growth and job creation.
He drew parallels with rapidly expanding economies such as China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, noting that prioritising support for MSMEs has been central to their success.“Our micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) serve as the driving force behind economic growth,” Obi said.
“It is imperative that we provide them with vigorous support to enhance development and create significant employment opportunities, particularly within the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.”
The engagements are seen as part of Obi’s ongoing efforts to attract investment and foster international partnerships that can support Nigeria’s economic recovery and diversification.
