The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to replace National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu if he no longer has confidence in his ability to handle Nigeria’s security challenges, rather than creating a parallel office.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the call in a statement on Tuesday, criticising the recent appointment of a Special Adviser on Homeland Security as unnecessary and ineffective.
“If the President no longer has confidence in his National Security Adviser, he should simply replace him, not create a new office with a copycat title,” Abdullahi said.
He argued that the title “Homeland Security” lacks real meaning or impact in the Nigerian context, describing it as largely meaningless.
The ADC’s reaction follows President Tinubu’s appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security.
The new role is expected to focus on domestic security matters, including border control and inter-agency coordination.
The opposition party maintained that the creation of the new office suggests a lack of confidence in the existing NSA and called on the President to take decisive action instead of what it termed a superficial duplication of roles.
The development comes amid ongoing concerns over the worsening security situation across several parts of the country.
