The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) has strongly refuted claims that Mr. Peter Obi, as governor of Anambra State, expelled Northerners or targeted them during his administration.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, on Sunday, the media office described the allegations as “baseless, malicious, and aimed at misrepresenting” Obi’s governance record.
It said the claims are being peddled by political opponents unable to challenge his achievements in accountability, fiscal responsibility, and development.
The statement dismissed as unfounded the recurring narrative that Obi repatriated Northerners, traders, or beggars.
It clarified that his administration ran a compassionate social welfare programme to assist destitute individuals and unaccompanied minors from various parts of the country who were vulnerable in Awka and Onitsha.
“There was never any form of ‘expulsion’ or ethnic cleansing,” the statement emphasised. “Instead, a structured social rehabilitation programme benefitted individuals from across the nation.”
The media office highlighted Obi’s positive relationship with Northern and Muslim communities in Anambra.
It noted that during periods of national ethno-religious tension, Obi worked to protect Northern residents, particularly in Onitsha’s Hausa Quarter, and prevented retaliatory attacks.
The statement further revealed that Obi’s government sponsored Muslim residents for the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and provided a safe environment for Northern traders and livestock merchants in markets like Amansea, free from harassment.
It added that Obi views Northern Nigeria as key to the country’s economic future, advocating for the region to become Africa’s food hub through enhanced agricultural production.
The media office described attempts to portray him as anti-North as ironic and politically motivated.
The Peter Obi Media Office urged fact-checking and said the facts would continue to speak for themselves despite ongoing smear campaigns.
