Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, met with two prominent African statesmen former Botswana President Ian Khama and former South African President Thabo Mbeki during his recent visit to South Africa.
In a statement on Monday, Obi described the meeting, which took place in Cape Town as his final engagement before departing for Johannesburg, as a valuable opportunity to appreciate the leaders’ positive contributions to regional discourse.
“I had the privilege of meeting two distinguished former leaders, President Ian Khama of Botswana and President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa,” Obi said.
He expressed gratitude for their remarks on recent immigration issues in the region and commended their ongoing advocacy for peace and unity among African nations.
Obi noted the continued high regard both leaders enjoy across the continent for their legacies.
“Both Mr Khama and Mr Mbeki continue to hold significant respect across the continent due to their remarkable contributions, both during and after their presidencies,” he added.
During his audience with Thabo Mbeki, Obi reconnected with his friend, former Ekiti State Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi, who delivered the keynote address at the Thabo Mbeki Africa Day lecture.
The lecture focused on rebuilding unity and revitalising institutions across the continent.The event was organised by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation.
