The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) has announced the full implementation of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system across Nigeria.
In a public notice dated May 18, 2026, the two agencies stated that the Tax ID initiative is in line with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandates every taxable person in the country to obtain the new Tax ID.
The new Tax ID is designed to serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, replacing the current Tax Identification Number (TIN) system.
It aims to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, strengthen tax administration, enhance transparency, and improve overall service delivery.
Key Benefits of the New Tax ID:
Single Tax Identity: One Tax ID for all tax transactions and engagements
Simplified Compliance: Easier registration, filing, and payment processes
Improved Transparency: Better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records
Enhanced Revenue Assurance: Reduction in tax leakages and improved accountability
Data Harmonization: Alignment of taxpayer information across federal and sub-national governments
The notice further stated that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing TIN Validation API. Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organizations have been directed to integrate with the new system.
Organizations requiring integration or validation services have been advised to contact:
JRB Standardisation and Modernisation Department (smd@jrb.gov.ng) for individuals, enterprises, and business names.
NRS Tax Automation Department (tax_automation@nrs.gov.ng (mailto:_automation@nrs.gov.ng)) for corporate entities.
The implementation is part of broader reforms to modernize Nigeria’s tax system and make compliance more efficient for citizens and businesses.
