The average retail price of household kerosene has surged across Nigeria, with some states now paying nearly N4,000 per litre, according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for April 2026.
Sokoto recorded the highest average price at N3,965.10 per litre, followed by Kebbi at N3,808.75 and Lagos at N3,790.90. Other high-price states include Katsina (N3,743.09), Edo (N3,639.16), and Niger (N3,572.57).
Bayelsa had the lowest average price at N1,815.40 per litre, followed by Kogi (N1,982.02) and Yobe (N2,235.77).The North-West zone recorded the highest average prices nationwide.
The NBS report also showed sharp month-on-month increases in several states, with Kaduna leading at 35.16%, followed by Bayelsa (34.82%) and Katsina (34.27%).
On a year-on-year basis, prices rose even more dramatically in many states, with Bauchi recording a 108.53% increase.
The steady rise in kerosene prices is attributed to the removal of subsidy in 2016 and the effects of naira devaluation.
Many households that previously relied on kerosene for cooking and lighting have shifted to cooking gas or charcoal as the product becomes increasingly unaffordable.
The development is expected to further strain low-income households already battling high inflation, rising electricity tariffs, and expensive cooking gas. Many may resort to firewood as an alternative.
