Bandits have demanded N20 million ransom for the release of Auwal Mas’ud Shitu, a 300-level student of Pure and Industrial Science at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU).
Shitu was abducted on May 17, 2026, at Mararaban Kankara along the Charanchi-Dutsinma road while travelling in a commercial vehicle.
According to sources, the student was transporting several sheep he had bought for resale in southern Nigeria, where he hoped to get better prices.
He reportedly engaged in the livestock business to support himself and his family following the death of his father.
The kidnappers later contacted the family and demanded N20 million for his release. Family sources said they cannot afford the huge ransom.
As of the time of this report, it is unclear if negotiations have resumed between the family and the abductors.
The incident was first highlighted by security analyst Bakatsine and Sahara Reporters. The Katsina State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the abduction.
