The Federal Capital Territory High Court has dismissed a $19.6 million lawsuit filed against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), ruling that the claim lacked merit.
In a judgment delivered on Thursday, the court held that the claimant failed to provide sufficient grounds to justify the demand for the disputed sum.
The suit stemmed from a contractual disagreement involving professional fees allegedly owed under a Direct Sale, Direct Purchase (DSDP) arrangement.
The claimant had argued that the original contract was expanded through oral agreements and conduct.
However, the court rejected this position, reaffirming the principle of the sanctity of contract.
It ruled that the terms of a written agreement remain binding on all parties and cannot be modified or expanded by verbal understandings without proper documentation and mutual consent.
With this decision, NNPC Ltd has been discharged from any liability in the matter, effectively ending the legal dispute.
