Panic gripped residents of Ikotun, Lagos State, after suspected cultists opened fire at a wedding after-party, killing two people including the bride’s father and a popular hypeman simply identified as Victor.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday along Oviawe Street, off Governor’s Road, shortly after a wedding ceremony ended and guests had gathered for the after-party celebration at an event centre.
Eyewitnesses said the hypeman, Victor, was entertaining guests when the gunmen stormed the venue and began shooting indiscriminately.
They dragged Victor out onto the street and assaulted him with dangerous weapons.
According to residents, the bride’s father was shot dead while trying to intervene and plead for Victor’s life. Both men died on the spot.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “When the gunmen were beating Victor, the bride’s father rushed in to plead for him.
In the process, both of them were shot and died on the spot.”Community members noted that the area has been experiencing cult-related violence for some time, suggesting the attack may have been linked to ongoing rivalries rather than directly targeting the wedding party.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the matter is under investigation and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for further action.
