A prominent governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Mustapha Salihu, has withdrawn from the 2027 gubernatorial race.
The announcement, made on Wednesday night, surprised many political observers in the state. Salihu, who enjoyed strong backing from Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, was widely seen as a frontrunner ahead of the APC primary.
In a public notice issued by the Comrade Mustapha Salihu Campaign Organization and signed by its Head of Strategic Communication, Ahmad Sajoh, the withdrawal was attributed to directives from the national leadership of the party in Abuja.
According to the statement, Salihu has stepped down from the gubernatorial contest to instead contest the senatorial ticket for the Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone. The notice implies that the party had deliberately delayed or arranged the senatorial primary in that zone to accommodate this move.
Political context surrounding the development points to internal party dynamics. Salihu was strongly supported by Governor Fintiri, while Ahmed Galadima — the aspirant he has now cleared the way for is believed to be backed by National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The development is expected to reshape the APC’s strategy in Adamawa State ahead of the primaries. No further comments have been issued by Salihu or the state chapter of the party as of the time of this report.
