FG to Launch Digital Switchover Platform with 100 Free Channels on June 17

The Federal Government will officially launch Nigeria’s nationwide Digital Switchover (DSO) platform on June 17, 2026, offering over 100 free television channels to Nigerians.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement on Wednesday during a facility tour of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat) headquarters in Abuja.

Idris said the long-delayed transition from analogue to digital broadcasting has now been completed, describing it as a fulfilment of President Bola Tinubu’s promise to reform critical sectors.

“For many years, Nigerians have been grappling with this idea of the DSO… Now this has happened, and it is ready to be commissioned by the 17th of June this year,” he said.

The new platform is expected to transform broadcasting, advertising, and viewership across Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa by introducing real-time audience measurement technology that tracks viewing patterns.

“This will help advertisers to take informed decisions about what programme it is that people are watching,” the minister added.Idris emphasised that, unlike previous failed attempts, the new system will be free, without reliance on costly encrypted set-top boxes.

The government has absorbed part of the costs to make the service accessible. The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, said the platform will launch with about 100 channels in standard definition before fully transitioning to high-definition (HD) broadcasting.

He also announced the establishment of six regional studios across the country to support content creators outside Lagos, Abuja, and Kano.NigComSat CEO, Jane Egerton-Idehen, revealed that the organisation plans to launch two additional satellites to strengthen service delivery and coverage.

The initiative is a collaboration between NigComSat, the NBC, the Ministry of Information, and the Ministry of Communications.
