The Federal Government has approved a 50 percent reduction in train fares across the country to make travel more affordable for passengers during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The fare discount, which takes effect from Monday, May 26 to Sunday, June 1, 2026, applies to all routes operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the initiative aims to ease the financial burden on citizens during the Sallah period when demand for intercity travel usually surges.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, explained that passengers will pay only half of the approved fares during the six-day period.
The Ministry added that passengers who had already bought tickets at the full rate before the discount announcement will not lose out.
They will receive a 50% rebate on their ticket value, which can be redeemed for future trips before expiry.
Train schedules and operational timetables remain unchanged. Passengers are advised to arrive early at stations to avoid congestion during the festive period.
