National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has moved to checkmate looming internal power struggles, declaring that the party will not be used as a “special-purpose vehicle” for any individual’s presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dickson made the declaration in Abuja while inaugurating the party’s National Selection Committee and addressing aspirants at the NDC Aspirants Dinner.
“We are not building a special-purpose vehicle for any individual. We are building together a political party that will stand the test of time,” he said.
The former Bayelsa Governor stressed that the NDC is being positioned as a credible, ideology-driven institution focused on reforms and national interest rather than personal ambitions.
He emphasised the need for transparent processes, strong internal democracy, and credible candidate selection mechanisms.To achieve this, Dickson inaugurated a 21-member National Selection Committee chaired by the NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas.
The committee is tasked with wide consultations across stakeholders, caucuses, and state chapters to ensure fairness and consensus in candidate selection.
He also announced plans to introduce electronic voting for future party primaries to promote transparency and reduce manipulation.
Peter Obi, a presidential hopeful, who also addressed the gathering, urged party members and aspirants to place national interest above personal ambition and prepare for sacrifice.
“All of us will not succeed. All of us will not be selected. But it is time we start recognising people who have worked hard and sacrificed for this country,” Obi said.
The developments come amid ongoing political realignments and discussions involving opposition figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as the 2027 elections approach.
