A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ibrahim Wala, has strongly criticised the party’s presidential primary, describing it as a “brazen, shameless auction” that betrayed democratic principles.
Wala backed the rejection of the primary results by presidential aspirant and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who on Tuesday rejected the process for failing to meet standards of transparency and fairness.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Wala said the exercise was not a genuine democratic primary but a betrayal of the values the ADC claims to uphold.
“What we witnessed during the primary elections was not a democratic primary; it was a brazen, shameless auction that betrayed every value the ADC promised to uphold,” he stated.
He accused those who conducted the primaries of practising the same vote-buying and manipulation the ADC usually criticises in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Wala urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to distance himself from what he called the “dirty, concocted primary election results” and warned that accepting the outcome would damage the party’s credibility.
He also lamented the treatment of young aspirants, describing them as victims of a “sham process” and “daylight robbery.”
The ADC has, however, said there is currently no sufficient evidence to substantiate claims of vote-buying or manipulation, noting that results are still being collated.
