Ex-Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq in Egypt, Medically Unfit to Appear in Court, Says Counsel

Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, is currently in Egypt receiving medical treatment and remains medically unfit to appear in court, her counsel has told the Federal Capital Territory High Court.

Farouq, alongside permanent secretary Bashir Nura Alkali and one Sani Mohammed, is facing a 21-count charge of breach of trust and abuse of office brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The anti-graft agency accused them of misappropriating about $1.3 million and N746.6 million.

At the resumed hearing on Monday, EFCC counsel Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) noted Farouq’s absence and urged the court to sustain the bench warrant earlier issued against her in April.

Her counsel, Oladipo Okpesheyi, informed the court that he received a medical report late on Sunday night indicating that Farouq is hospitalized in Egypt on her doctor’s advice and would require about two months to recover before she can travel.

Presiding Judge, Jude Onwuegbuzie, criticised the delay tactics but adjourned the matter to June 8, 2026, for arraignment while keeping the arrest warrant against the former minister active.
