EFCC Declares Ex-Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq Wanted Over Alleged Fraud


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially declared Sadiya Umar Farouq, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, a wanted person for alleged abuse of office and diversion of public funds.


In a public notice on its website, the anti-graft agency urged anyone with information about her whereabouts to contact the EFCC. 


Farouq, 52, is from Zamfara State, with her last known address listed as EN008, Okpo River, off Agulu Street, Maitama, Abuja.Farouq served as minister between 2019 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. 


The EFCC is investigating her ministry over an alleged N37 billion fraud.On April 16, 2026, a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo issued an arrest warrant against Farouq and Bashir Nura Alkali, a permanent secretary in the ministry. 


The warrants were granted after the duo failed to appear in court for their scheduled arraignment.Farouq, Alkali, and one Sani Mohammed are facing a 21-count charge bordering on breach of trust and abuse of office. 


The EFCC alleges that the trio misappropriated about $1.3 million and N746.6 million. Part of the funds, which were meant to be refunded to the ministry after payments under a social intervention programme, were allegedly diverted for personal use.
