Drone Strike Sparks Fire Outside UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant

A drone strike on Sunday triggered a fire near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, authorities in the United Arab Emirates have confirmed.

The projectile hit an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the plant, sparking the blaze. Officials reported no injuries and stated that the incident had no impact on radiation levels or the plant’s overall operations.

The Abu Dhabi Media Office said emergency teams responded promptly to contain the fire, and the UAE’s nuclear regulatory authority confirmed that all units at the facility continue to function normally.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was notified, with radiation readings remaining at normal levels.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and a fragile ceasefire linked to the broader Iran conflict, raising concerns about the safety of critical infrastructure in the Gulf.

The Barakah plant, the first commercial nuclear power station in the Arab world, consists of four reactors and plays a significant role in the UAE’s energy diversification strategy. It is located approximately 175 miles west of Abu Dhabi.

Investigations into the source of the drone are ongoing.
