The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that no foreign troops participated in the ground operation that led to the elimination of notorious ISIS commander, Abu Bilal Al-Minuki.
Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, said the United States only provided intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance support, and other force enablers.
“There were no foreign boots on the ground during this operation,” Onoja stated. He described the mission as a carefully planned precision strike executed by Nigerian troops, adding that no Nigerian soldier lost his life due to the high level of professionalism displayed.
Onoja explained that earlier reports of Al-Minuki’s death in 2024 were based on mistaken identity.
The neutralised terrorist was the actual high-value target who had operated under multiple aliases to evade capture for years. He was listed on watchlists by the United Nations, United States, European Union, and Nigeria.
The DHQ spokesman noted that months of intelligence gathering preceded the successful operation. He warned that other wanted terrorist leaders, including bandit kingpin Bello Turji, remain under surveillance and “cannot hide forever.”
Onoja urged Nigerians to provide timely intelligence to security forces and avoid paying ransoms, which only empower criminal networks.
