Current Senate Standing Orders Bar Akpabio from Senate Presidency – Oshiomhole

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) has declared that the current Senate Standing Orders do not qualify Senate President Godswill Akpabio to continue in the position, describing his emergence as inconsistent with the rules.

In an interview with Arise Television, Oshiomhole backed the position of Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (SAN) on the amendment of the Senate Standing Orders, insisting the fight over the issue is far from over.“

The current Senate President served a 4-year term, lost his reelection bid, served as a minister, and returned this term to become Senate President again,” Oshiomhole explained.

“If you add his first term to his current term, he still has not served 8 years. If 8 years is the minimum requirement, Sen. Akpabio does not qualify to preside because he has not met it.”

He argued that if Akpabio assumed the office in error, that error must be corrected.Oshiomhole further noted that the inclusion of the word “consecutively” in the relevant rules effectively reduces the Senate President’s term to three years for the purpose of determining ranking and eligibility.

He warned that such provisions are dangerous for the country.

“These kinds of laws are what breed dictatorship in Africa,” he said.

The former Edo State Governor maintained that the Senate leadership issue remains contentious and urged that the Standing Orders be strictly followed to avoid setting unhealthy precedents.
