The Imo state police command says it has arrested three suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Henry Okoye, the command’s public relations officer, in a
statement on Tuesday, said the police recovered more than 3,115 rounds of
ammunition and surveillance drones from the suspects’ camp.
Okoye said operatives stormed the group’s hideout in Nguru
Aboh Mbaise LGA of Imo state on Saturday.
Following a gun battle, three suspects were arrested, while
others fled the scene.
“The operation was intelligence-driven, premised on actionable information obtained from the confessional statement of a high-ranking IPOB/ESN commander, Ebube Uchenna Mmaduakolam, also known as ‘Ebube Virus’,” he said.
“Three suspects were apprehended at the scene and are
currently in lawful custody, providing the Force with critical information
pertaining to the group’s logistics networks, personnel structure, and planned
operations.”
He added that a search of the camp led to the recovery of
two general-purpose machine guns (GPMGs), 3,115 rounds of GPMG ammunition, one
AK-47 assault rifle, one pump-action shotgun, multiple units of surveillance
drones, and Biafra currency in various denominations.
Okoye also said Tunji Disu, the inspector-general of police
(IGP), commended the operatives for their courage, professional conduct, and
tactical precision during the operation.
According to the statement, the IGP noted that the seizure
of the weapons and ammunition had significantly weakened the operational
capacity of the IPOB/ESN network in the south-east and dealt a major blow to
its activities in the region.
