Armed bandits have kidnapped 15 residents, mostly women, children and infants, in a late-night operation on Sabon Layi community in Kakumi Ward of Bakori Local Government Area.
The attack occurred around 9:45 pm on Thursday when gunmen stormed the area and specifically targeted households belonging to a man identified as Aliyu and his younger brother.
Sources in the community said the bandits operated with precision, dividing into two groups. One group created a distraction by rustling two cattle, while the other infiltrated homes and abducted residents.
The attackers fled in different directions without firing any shots to avoid raising alarm.
By the time locals realised the cattle had been stolen and attempted to give chase, the bandits had already escaped with their human captives through Mununu village in neighbouring Faskari Local Government Area, a route commonly used by criminal elements in the region.
Local security volunteers, including members of the Community Watch Corps and vigilantes, mobilised quickly for a rescue operation but could not catch up with the abductors.
The raid is suspected to have been carried out by a faction linked to notorious bandit leader Kwashen Garwa, who had reportedly entered a peace agreement with authorities months earlier.
The area had enjoyed relative calm since that deal until this latest incident.Farmers Face N10m LevyIn a related development, bandits have imposed a N10 million levy on several farming communities in Faskari and Bakori local government areas as a condition for allowing them to cultivate their lands during the upcoming wet season.
Affected communities include Yanshuni, Unguwar Lamido, Zamfarawa, Unguwar Dan Malka, Doma, Ruwan Godiya, Gidan Kare, and Unguwar Wawo.
A resident, who spoke anonymously, expressed deep frustration: “We don’t go to them; they come to us. Now they have placed a levy that we don’t even know how to pay. Government should please come to our aid. What we need is a permanent solution, not a temporary one.”
As of the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by security agencies or the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, regarding the abduction or the extortion demands.
