The Nigerian Navy has placed a 13-hour daily restriction on movement along the Calabar–Oron water channel to combat piracy, smuggling and kidnapping.
The restriction, which takes effect from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, was announced by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho.
The Navy said the measure will allow for better surveillance and deny criminals freedom of action on the busy waterway. Legitimate users have been urged to comply with the new directive.
The restriction follows recent surges in maritime crimes, including passenger kidnappings.
In a recent clearance operation, troops from NNS Victory, FOB Ibaka, and the Nigerian Army 13 Brigade raided Dayspring Island and other criminal hideouts.
During the operation, a militant camp linked to a suspect known as ‘Juju’ was destroyed, two boats were seized, and one suspected informant was arrested.
The Navy described the action as part of ongoing efforts to restore security on the Calabar–Oron channel.
