Atiku Abubakar Takes Early Lead in ADC Presidential Primaries, Wins Five States

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has taken an early commanding lead in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries for the 2027 election, emerging victorious in at least five states.

Results from the nationwide direct primaries, held across thousands of wards, show Atiku dominating in several states including Zamfara, Yobe, Sokoto, and Gombe, with strong performances reported in other states as well.

In Gombe State, Atiku polled a landslide 139,334 votes against Rotimi Amaechi’s 1,150 and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen’s 465. Similar decisive wins were recorded in Yobe and Zamfara, where he defeated his closest rivals, Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen.

The ADC primaries feature three cleared aspirants: Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

The exercise is being conducted through direct voting at ward levels.Atiku, who recently joined the ADC as part of a broader opposition realignment, described the process as “democracy at work” after casting his vote in Adamawa State.

More results are still being collated from other states, but Atiku currently holds a significant early lead as the party moves towards determining its presidential flag bearer for the 2027 general election.
