Army Rescues Victims, Apprehends Suspects in Imo, Enugu, Cross River Operations


Troops of the Nigerian Army have recorded significant successes in separate security operations across Imo, Cross River, and Enugu states, rescuing four victims and apprehending six suspects.


According to an operational update from the 82 Division/Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, the operations were conducted between Friday and Saturday based on credible intelligence on kidnapping and other criminal activities.


In Imo State, troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Forward Operating Base (FOB) Izombe, in collaboration with local security networks, rescued three kidnapped victims along the Oguta–Owerri road in Oguta Local Government Area.


The troops trailed the kidnappers to their hideout in Okohia Umueju forest, where four victims were discovered in captivity. While three were successfully rescued, one victim was killed by the kidnappers during an escape attempt. 


The troops engaged the criminals, who fled in disarray.Items recovered from the scene include ₦987,500 in cash (suspected ransom), five mobile phones, and two power banks.


In Cross River State, troops foiled a daring kidnapping at a hotel in Ekori, Yakurr Local Government Area, during a political party primary election. 


Two groups of suspected kidnappers stormed the venue, one in a Toyota Corolla (registration ABJ 810HL) and the other on motorcycles.The troops swiftly intercepted the vehicle, rescued an abducted INEC Returning Officer, and arrested three suspects. 


The victim had been forced to transfer ₦70,000. One armed suspect escaped into the bush with a bag containing a mobile phone, ATM card, and election materials, while the second group fled with ballot boxes. 


Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing criminals.In Enugu State, under Operation Eastern Sanity II, troops raided a suspected cultists’ hideout at Achi Town in Oji River Local Government Area. 


The operation led to the recovery of eight motorcycles and two buckets of locally made gunpowder. 


Three suspects were arrested, including an 85-year-old man and two women aged 26 and 29.


The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to intensifying operations to curb kidnapping and criminal activities in the South-East region and surrounding areas.
