Senator David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has declared that the party’s just-concluded presidential primary has demonstrated that democracy and genuine political competition can thrive in Nigeria without descending into crisis or division.
Mark made the remark on Wednesday at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, during the official collation and declaration of results where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
According to the results announced at the event, Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes, defeating former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi who scored 504,117 votes, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen with 177,120 votes.
Total votes cast stood at 2,546,457 out of over 3.1 million registered party members.
Speaking after formally presenting the ADC flag to Atiku, the former Senate President said the primary was more than just selecting a candidate.
“Today is not just about announcing a presidential candidate. Today is also about proving a point to Nigeria and to Nigerians. It is about proving that democracy can still work. Proving that political competition does not have to become political warfare. That a party can organise itself around principles instead of personalities,” Mark stated.
He noted that many had doubted the ADC’s ability to conduct a peaceful and credible primary, with some predicting confusion and collapse.“But you stood firm. You kept faith with the ADC. And today, because of your commitment, our party stands taller, stronger, and more united,” he added.
Mark commended the Presidential Screening Committee and the Primary Election Committee for their professionalism and commitment to transparency under intense pressure.
He also praised the three aspirants, Atiku, Amaechi, and Hayatu-Deen for submitting themselves to the democratic process, describing it as a unique demonstration of the party’s commitment to internal democracy.
