The Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja that affirmed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its factional National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party described the ruling as consistent with both the law and common sense. Ememobong emphasized that Nigerian laws cannot have retroactive or retrospective effect.
The PDP faction further condemned the suit challenging Jonathan’s eligibility as “a gross abuse of court processes” and an unnecessary distraction.
It praised the court’s decision to award punitive costs against the plaintiff, saying it would serve as a deterrent to “busybodies and irritants” seeking to derail Nigeria’s democratic process.
“This development, coupled with the screening waiver that our party had granted President Goodluck Jonathan, has made the pathway for his presidential rescue mission totally unfettered,” the statement added.
The party noted that its primaries to select candidates are scheduled for May 28, 2026.
The ruling comes amid ongoing political maneuvering within the PDP, as the Turaki-led faction continues to position Jonathan as a potential flag bearer for the 2027 polls.
